{"id":1281,"date":"2017-03-22T08:32:35","date_gmt":"2017-03-22T08:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=1281"},"modified":"2022-05-29T10:05:01","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T10:05:01","slug":"over-400-local-villagers-gather-to-call-for-halt-of-dams-on-namtu-river-in-northern-shan-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=1281","title":{"rendered":"Over 400 local villagers gather to call for halt of dams on Namtu River in northern Shan State"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"article-header clearfix\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"row equal-height\">\n<div class=\"col col-xs-12 item-main\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"article-content-main col-lg-9 \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<section class=\"article-content clearfix\"><strong>Over 400 local villagers gather to call for halt of dams on Namtu River in northern Shan State<\/strong><\/section>\n<section class=\"article-content clearfix\">March 22, 2017<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On March 21, 2017, over 400 local villagers gathered on the Namtu river bank in northern Shan State calling for the protection of water resources and a halt to dams on the Namtu river.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From 9:00 am to 11:00 am, villagers from Da Dae, Ta Long, and 20 other villages around Hsipaw township, as well as members of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) and Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP), gathered on the river bank near Da Dae village, north of Hsipaw town, to mark the month of the International Day of Action for Rivers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A series of four new dams are being planned along the Namtu river, which would threaten communities and ecosystems relying on the river\u2019s natural flow. The fault line cuts through Nawngkhio, Kyaukme district, northern Shan State, where the 700 megawatt Middle Yeywa dam is planned by Norway on the Namtu river.<\/section>\n<section class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe government should listen to local communities\u2019 voices, because they are elected by the people.
