{"id":2769,"date":"2022-03-14T06:51:40","date_gmt":"2022-03-14T06:51:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=2769"},"modified":"2022-05-19T08:11:49","modified_gmt":"2022-05-19T08:11:49","slug":"foreign-dam-builders-must-stop-colluding-with-burmas-murderous-regime-and-pull-out-of-shan-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=2769","title":{"rendered":"Foreign dam-builders must stop colluding with Burma\u2019s murderous regime and pull out of Shan State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Press release by Action for Shan State Rivers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">March 14, 2022<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Foreign dam-builders must stop colluding with Burma\u2019s murderous regime and pull out of Shan State<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To mark the International Day of Action for Rivers, communities across Shan State are posting slogans on riverbanks calling for a stop to all new dams, which will earn revenue for Burma\u2019s murderous military regime and cement its energy partnerships with neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In recent months, regime leader Min Aung Hlaing has called for the stepping up of hydropower development in Shan State to address Burma\u2019s energy needs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are already ten large dams on Shan State\u2019s rivers, producing over half of Burma\u2019s total hydropower output. Several more are under construction, and another twenty planned, including three giant dams on the Salween for export of power to China and Thailand. Over 1,600 people have been killed, and over 12,000 arrested. Razel-Bec is building the dam in a joint venture with IPG, a subsidiary of the IGE Group, which was sanctioned by the EU last month for its links to the regime.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2775\" revealed its intention to proceed with the Middle Yeywa dam in the conflict-torn Namtu river basin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe urge foreign companies to immediately pull out from all dam projects in Shan State,\u201d said Sai Kham Harn, a community leader from Hsipaw. \u201cThese dams only benefit the regime and fuel their atrocities against civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a
