{"id":368,"date":"2019-09-12T03:52:21","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T03:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=368"},"modified":"2022-05-29T08:43:38","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T08:43:38","slug":"ifc-must-stop-promoting-dams-on-the-namtu-myitnge-river-amidst-conflict-in-shan-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=368","title":{"rendered":"IFC must stop promoting dams on the Namtu\/Myitnge river amidst conflict in Shan State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Statement by Action for Shan State Rivers:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>IFC must stop promoting dams on the Namtu\/Myitnge river amidst conflict in Shan State<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">September 12, 2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We, Action for Shan State Rivers, oppose the International Finance Corporation (IFC)&#8217;s Cumulative Impact Assessment in the Namtu\/Myitnge river basin, which is promoting dam-building, and refuse to participate in their \u201cstakeholder\u201d meeting in Taunggyi today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The IFC is holding the meeting at Mountain Star Hotel in Karn Shey Quarter of Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State. It will be chaired by a state level representative of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE) or Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The IFC has stated clearly in their Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Myanmar Hydropower Sector in 2018, that the Namtu\/Myitnge is a \u201cpriority\u201d for hydropower development, even though war is raging along the river and local communities are strongly opposed to any new dams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe IFC meeting in Taunggyi is just a box-ticking exercise in preparation for dam-building on the Namtu\/Myitnge river, and we want no part of it\u201d said Sai Khur Hseng, Shan Sapawa Environmental Organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The IFC\u2019s assessment of the Namtu\/Myitnge basin is being funded by Australian Aid, and implemented by the Swedish engineering consultancy company SWECO.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Four large dams are being planned on the mainstream Namtu-Myitnge river, including the Upper Yeywa dam, involving companies from Switzerland, Japan and China, which is under construction in Kyaukme township.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-374 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-12-2019_Namtu_river.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-12-2019_Namtu_river.jpg 700w, https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-12-2019_Namtu_river-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-12-2019_Namtu_river-100x70.jpg 100w, https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-12-2019_Namtu_river-696x491.jpg 696w, https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/9-12-2019_Namtu_river-595x420.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another planned dam is the 735 Megawatt Middle Yeywa Dam in Nawng Khio township, a project of Norway\u2019s state-owned SN Power.
