The most dramatic change can be seen in the gold mining area 30 kilometers upstream from the Thai border, where an expanded mesh of new roads and mining pits has been gouged into the forested hillsides.\u00a0 The runoff from these mines, containing heavy metals dislodged from the earth, flows down directly into the Kok River. Both use the environmentally damaging in-situ leaching process that involves injection of large quantities of chemicals into hillsides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The May 6, 2025 satellite image of the rare earth mine west of the Kok River showed the circular processing pools still under construction. This includes over a million Thais living along the Kok River in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces \u2013 not to mention the tens of millions living downstream along the Mekong River, of which the Kok is a tributary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thai authorities have been testing the water of the Kok River every two weeks since April 2025, and found levels of arsenic and lead above safety standards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Mong Yawn area of eastern Mong Hsat township is jointly controlled by the United Wa State Army (UWSA) and the Burmese military regime, necessitating permission from both entities for the mines to operate. According to inside sources, the operator of both the rare earth mines and the main gold mining operation along the Kok River in Mong Yawn is China Investment Mining Company, which is carrying out rare earth mining in northern Laos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">China Investment Mining Company is 90% <a href=\"https:\/\/cfgold.com\/media\/ejhfv14d\/oshu7m7rck65tda1udboqrhenls94tac87osrx0j.pdf\">owned<\/a> by Shanghai Chijin Xiawu Metal Resources Co. Ltd., which is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yicaiglobal.com\/news\/xiamen-tungsten-chifeng-gold-team-up-to-develop-rare-earth-resources-in-laos\">joint venture<\/a> formed in September 2022 to develop rare earth resources in Laos by China\u2019s state-backed Xiamen Tungsten Corporation and Chifeng Gold, the largest non-state owned gold producer in China. Xiamen Tungsten Corporation is one of China\u2019s major rare earth corporations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Chifeng-Gold.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-4614\" src=\"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Chifeng-Gold.png?ver=1779074162653\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Chifeng-Gold.png 500w, https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Chifeng-Gold-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Chifeng-Gold-60x42.png 60w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recent satellite images of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seetaoe.com\/details\/231271.html\">China Investment Mining Company\u2019s rare earth mines northeast of Muang Kham town<\/a> (a.k.a. Mengkang) in Xiangkhuang province of northern Laos (in the southern orange-shaded concession area on Chifeng Gold\u2019s map) already shows widespread environmental destruction, suggesting what is in store for the Kok river basin.
