{"id":558,"date":"2021-01-26T03:01:05","date_gmt":"2021-01-26T03:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=558"},"modified":"2022-05-19T08:51:46","modified_gmt":"2022-05-19T08:51:46","slug":"statement-on-hsipaw-township-authorities-questioning-four-leading-organizers-of-open-letter-to-state-counselor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=558","title":{"rendered":"Statement on Hsipaw township authorities questioning four leading organizers of open letter to State Counselor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Statement on Hsipaw township authorities questioning four leading organizers of open letter to State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi to stop dam construction on Namtu\/Myitnge river<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">January 26, 2021<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On October 27, 2020, about 2,000 impacted villagers in Hsipaw, Namtu, Kyaukme and Lashio townships signed a petition and sent an open letter to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi urging her to halt all dam construction on the Namtu\/Myitnge river in northern Shan State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are three large dams planned: the 735 megawatt Middle Yeywa dam, invested in by Norway\u2019s state-owned SN Power; the 280 megawatt Upper Yeywa dam, invested in by Chinese, Japanese, Swiss and French companies; and the 210 megawatt Namtu (Hsipaw) dam invested in by Natural Current Energy Hydropower Company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On January 25, 2021, the Hsipaw township administration committee called the four leading organizers of the open letter to meet them at the Hsipaw general administration office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The committee asked about the sending of the open letter to Aung San Suu Kyi, personal information, impacts of the respective dams, and local people\u2019s opinions on dam building.
