{"id":656,"date":"2020-01-21T04:05:39","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T04:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=656"},"modified":"2022-05-29T08:36:20","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T08:36:20","slug":"press-release-by-shan-community-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shanhumanrights.org\/?p=656","title":{"rendered":"The Four Cuts: new video exposes horror of Burma Army \u201cclearance operations\u201d in Shan State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Press release by Shan community groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>January 21, 2020<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Four Cuts: new video exposes horror of Burma Army \u201cclearance operations\u201d in Shan State<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shan community groups launched today a new video, The Four Cuts, documenting atrocities committed by the Burma Army during past \u201cclearance operations\u201d in Shan State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On December 11, 2019, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi defended Burma\u2019s military against charges of genocide at the International Court of Justice, saying they were just carrying out \u201cclearance operations\u201d targeting insurgents or terrorists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The video shows the real meaning of \u201cclearance operations\u201d for Shan State inhabitants: brutal scorched earth campaigns \u2013 better known as \u201cFour Cuts operations\u201d &#8211; which have devastated and depopulated large areas of Shan State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In new video testimony, witnesses recount Burma Army atrocities committed during operations which forced about 400,000 people out of 1,800 villages in fifteen townships in central and southern Shan State.
