Update: Over 8,600 displaced by deadly junta air and ground attacks in Kyaukme
Over 8,600 villagers have fled from deadly junta air and ground attacks in Kyaukme township, which have killed 29 civilians and injured 66 others, mostly in monasteries, between August 9 and September 6, 2025.
The air and artillery attacks have centred on Nawng Ping village tract, 20 kilometers southwest of Kyaukme town, where junta troops advancing from Nawngkhio are attempting to drive the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) off the Muse-Mandalay highway. Bombs and shells have fallen dangerously close to China’s oil and gas pipelines, which pass through Nawng Ping tract.
Starting in the morning of August 18, junta troops at the Gokhteik Bridge launched barrages of artillery shells and drone bombs into Nawng Ping and surrounding villages, and on August 19, about 700 junta troops entered Htantabin village (four kilometers southeast of Nawng Ping).
On August 20, junta launched airstrikes on the Nawng Ping area. At 10:30 am, a jet fighter dropped a 500-pound bomb directly on Pang Dee Temple, where about 300 IDPs from nearby villages were sheltering. The bomb killed 10 civilians outright and injured 32 (one of whom later died). The wounded were taken to hospitals in Lashio and Kutkhai. Shortly afterwards, another 500-pound bomb was dropped on nearby Look Par village, killing two civilians and injuring another.

The airstrikes on Kyaukme township continued almost every day until September 6, not only at the frontline around Nawng Ping, but also on Kyaukme town and Mong Ngaw sub-township, where temples were directly targeted. On August 23, a junta jet fighter dropped two 500-pound bombs into Kongjalarng village temple of Mong Ngaw sub-township, which killed a young boy, and injured seven other civilians, including two monks and a novice. On August 25, a junta jet fighter dropped two 250-pound bombs into Quarter 7 of Kyaukme town, injuring three novices and one man in War Soe monastery.
Civilians were also shot at close range by junta troops entering and looting homes in local villages. On August 23, while looting a house in Nawng Ping village, junta troops shot at a family they found there, killing the 45-year-old father on the spot, and injuring his wife and daughter. The next day, junta troops shot dead an IDP couple sheltering in another house in Htantabin.
As a result of the air and ground attacks, over 8,600 villagers – mostly elderly, women and children — have fled from Nawng Ping and surrounding villages to take shelter in over 40 villages mostly under control of the Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) in southern Kyaukme township. The IDPs are mostly sheltering in village temples, where they are facing shortages of drinking water, food, medicine and other basic supplies. Villagers fleeing from Nawng Ping had already suffered from the impacts of heavy flooding in the first week of August.
Between August 9 and September 3, apart from the attacks in Kyaukme township, the junta also carried out five airstrikes on Mogok town, which killed 29 civilians and injured 14, and two airstrikes in Hsipaw township: one on Hsipaw town, which injured three civilians, and one on Baw Gyo village, which injured one civilian. The bombing in Baw Gyo village was only 200 meters away from China’s oil and gas pipelines, damaging the historical Baw Gyo pagoda building and three houses.
