Update: Elderly farmer slashed to death, over 40 houses torched by joint SAC and PNO militia troops in Nyaungshwe township, southern Shan State
In the second week of May 2025, an elderly farmer was slashed to death and over 40 houses were torched in Chang Joi village, southern Nyaungshwe township, by a joint column of SAC and Pa-o National Organisation (PNO) militia troops patrolling the area. Two SAC airstrikes also damaged a temple and three houses in nearby villages.
Since May 6, 2025, over 200 SAC and PNO troops have been deployed into southern Nyaungshwe and Hsihseng townships where local PDF groups are operating close to the Phekhon township border. This has led to heavy fighting.
On May 9, 2025, early in the morning, the SAC and PNO militia troops arrived at Chang Joi village and torched over 20 houses. That evening, SAC and militia troops arrested Loong Jing, aged 54, who was tending his hill-farm outside Chang Joi village, and slashed his neck with a knife, killing him. They also robbed him of 9,700,000 kyat.
On May 10, in the afternoon, the SAC and PNO militia group torched another 10 houses in Chang Joi village.
Chang Joi village is situated 66 kms south of Nyaungshwe town. Previously, in January 2024, SAC and PNO troops had entered the village and looted villagers’ property, causing all the residents to flee. Since that time, the village has been almost entirely deserted, with only a few villagers tending their farms nearby.
On May 12, at around 11 pm, there was a SAC airstrike on Lin Pok Daek village, Lin Lam tract, 9 kms southwest of Chang Joi village, damaging Lin Pok Daek temple.


On May 13 at around 5pm, there was a SAC airstrike on Jang Leik village (4.68 kms south of Chang Joi village) and Na Gone village (7.6 kms southeast of Chang Joi village), which damaged at least three houses.
Later on May 13, at 9:45 pm, the SAC and PNO troops torched a further 10 houses in Chang Joi village. There were originally over 80 houses in Chang Joi village.
