Villager hit and killed by drunk SAC military truck driver in Mong Hsu, southern Shan State

A 28-year-old man was hit and killed by a military truck driven by a drunk SAC soldier in Mong Hsu, southern Shan State on January 29, 2022.

The victim, 28-year-old Sai Maung Nyo, was about to get into his car after helping friends prepare for a wedding party in Pang Joy village (in the outskirts of Mong Hsu town), when the empty military truck came speeding from behind and hit him so hard that he landed 15 yards away. People in the vicinity said the sound of the impact was so loud that they thought it was a garbage truck dumping its load. The driver did not stop after the accident.

Sai Maung Nyo was taken immediately to Mong Hsu Hospital, but the wounds to his body and head were so severe that the doctor said he could not treat him, and recommended transfer to a hospital in Taunggyi or Kho Lam. However, his condition worsened before he could be moved, and when it was clear there was no hope of saving him, the family took him home, where he died at 1.30 pm, two hours after the accident.

The military truck was seen driving into the IB 149 base in Pang Joy village after the accident, so some of the victim’s friends went to the base that day to demand that action be taken against the driver. They met with one of the commanders of the base, who said the driver had been drunk and they would jail him, but that he was from a base in Namzarng, not from their base.

That evening at 8 pm, ten SAC military officers from the IB 149 base came to Sai Maung Nyo’s house in Quarter 3 of Mong Hsu town and took a picture of his wife and of her ID card. His wife asked them how they would provide for her and her 2-year-old daughter, as they had lost their family breadwinner. Sai Maung Nyo owned a pick-up truck and worked as a driver. The municipal officer  said they would arrange for some funds to be given to the family, but until now they have provided nothing.

The family arranged the funeral and burial in Mong Hsu on January 31, 2022, at a cost of over 10 million kyat.
